From 2–3 October, the ECH retreat in Bad Vöslau brought together researchers across different fields to explore how interdisciplinary collaboration can tackle today’s environmental challenges – from microplastics in the air to climate litigation and parenthood in times of the climate crisis.

On the art of translating complex environmental research into public conversations – and why silence is not an option.

With €45,000 awarded through a competitive review, these interdisciplinary collaborations aim to spark innovative research and lead to joint publications and grant proposals. We congratulate our hub members and look forward to the discoveries ahead!

How can young researchers effectively learn to communicate evidence-based, scientific recommendations to policymakers? This question was at the core of the Science for Policy Hackathon organized by the Innovation unit and the ECH of the University of Vienna in cooperation with the City of Vienna, the Urban Sustainability Living Lab, and SDG Watch Austria. At the final pitch event on Monday, February 10th, the groups showcased their ideas and the winners were celebrated.

About 200 guests attended the inauguration and launch event of the Environment and Climate Research Hub (ECH) on 8 March in the Great Hall of the University of Vienna.

On International Women’s Day, March 8th, 2024, the ECH awarded its first Environment and Climate Award in two categories. Taking place during the celebration of the Hub’s kick-off event, two outstanding young scientists from the University of Vienna, Tatiana Konrad and Lucia Fuchslueger, were honored with the “ECH Research Award”. Katharina Rogenhofer, alumna of the University and committed advocate of evidence-based climate policy, received the Society Award for Environment and Climate.
